What inspired you to start your own independent food business?

I had a background in drinks marketing.

Back in 2014, when I launched the business, I saw a lot of top-end hotel bars doing pre-batched Negronis and Manhattans to make them consistent. I spotted that this was happening more and more, and thought it would be really cool if you could create a retail brand around pre-bottled cocktails. I launched the business from a stall at Brockley Market, which was incredible for customer feedback… less so for frozen toes in the winter!

What sets your products apart from others in the market?

Behind the scenes, are design and produce cocktails for some of the UK’s most respected hospitality operators – from the luxury carriages of The Belmond Pullman and the bedrooms of The Pig Hotels to the tables of Tonkotsu and Rosa’s Thai.  Whilst other brands claim to be bar-quality, our cocktails are literally designed to pass the taste test of some of the UK’s most discerning palates.

Just as importantly, we are the world’s first cocktail brand to be available in revolutionary Paper bottles! The new bottles are made of a 94% recyclable paperboard outer and use 77% less plastic than a plastic bottle. They are also five times lighter than a glass bottle and require less protective packaging, reducing transport costs and reduces the carbon footprint by over six time lower than the conventional glass bottle. These new bottles are not only great for the environment but look incredible too!

Since launching in 2014, World of Zing has paved its own successful path with category redefining pre-batch cocktails that can now be found in some of the UK’s leading retailers and hospitality operators. With this new bottle, World of Zing is once again disrupting the industry and creating positive consumer conversations and I hope the business can continue to innovate and excite in the industry!

The bottles also feature a new design and seasonal flavours including Kaffir Lime ‘Picante’ Margarita, Blood Orange Negroni and Rhubarb Cosmopolitan.

Can you describe your approach to cocktail development and experimentation?

We don’t necessarily develop new cocktails with the intention of being overtly innovative, but we are also constantly pushing the boundaries of flavour and styles of cocktails that can be bottled, so ingredients innovation is more of a by-product of the challenges that we face.  For example, our now famous Persian Lime & Nori Margarita uses seaweed for that moreish salty sensation and you’ll also find me using chickpea water instead of egg whites in cocktails for a more sustainable approach to creating a frothy texture!

Whilst an average bar or restaurant may create 10-12 new drinks per year, we will probably create this many every month, whether it’s for a new bottled cocktail or for one of my regular cocktail segments on Channel 4 Sunday Brunch.

As such, I spend a huge amount of time eating and drinking out, which admittedly is often as fun as it sounds, but the hard part is translating ideas and musings into cocktails, which can take weeks or months to bring to life!

What do you enjoy most about being a small independent food maker?

At heart, I just really love designing drinks and playing with flavour, so I’m hugely privileged to have a job that truly allows me to express myself!

Customers love our new launches and one off items as they are truly one of a kind. For example our “going to the curry house” chocolate; one bite changes flavour several times following the course of a meal at an Indian restaurant. First poppadom and mango chutney, then curry, then chilli heat and lastly you are left with chocolate. It is a truly unique experience you wont find anywhere else!
