Meet the Makers: Rythmik Cocktails

Co-Founder: Tash Samek

Rythmik Cocktails was an idea born in lockdown at the award-winning bar we owned, renowned for serving up expertly mixed cocktails and music to those in the know. With both the dance floor and glasses empty we needed a way to get the music and cocktails to people’s homes and so it began. Our bar quality pre-mixed bottled cocktails and accompanying playlists are hand mixed by us to our own bespoke recipes, perfected over years of experience and experimentation. All made from the best ingredients we’ve found.

The cocktails have become a bit of a hit so we’ve handed back the keys to the bar to focus our passion and expertise for mixing cocktails and music to deliver incredible, cocktail-led experiences to people who love great drinks and good times, anywhere and everywhere.

We’ve been perfecting some of these recipes since opening our bar in 2011 and these are the exact same drinks that we served to our customers at the bar so you really are getting cocktail bar quality drinks. Although we’ve given the keys back to the bar, our commitment to quality remains strong.

One thing that we take equally seriously as our cocktails is our music. Having hosted the likes of Norman Jay MBE, Jazzie B OBE, DJ Yoda and even SG Lewis (just before he became a global phenomenon) we believe that cocktails taste better with the right music. We spend hours listening to our favourite genres of music, disco, funk, soul, hip-hop and house, discovering new tracks or unearthing old gems to be given another play. Our playlists bring the vibe to your Rythmik Cocktails experience.

What inspired you to start your own independent drink business?

I’ve always wanted to run my own business and have been full of ideas, but it was about waiting for the right one for that time. It’s great to be able to put your ideas, creativity and values into practice- but there are definitely other constraints!

My brother owned a bar and music venue in Marlow, known for amazing drinks and music. During lockdown, people asked him to deliver his cocktails. My background is in drinks branding so I suggested we turn it into a brand, giving people the good vibes and whole experience of the bar (Clayton’s – our previous name before we rebranded last year) to their homes. Which is why on top of our cocktails being bar quality, it is important that we help people have a good time. We do that through our stand-out packaging and by curating soundtracks for people to drink our cocktails to.

What sets your products apart from others in the market?

Number 1, our obsession with making sure our cocktails taste as amazing in a bottle, as when they did when Antosh made them fresh in his bar – as that is how we started out!

Number 2, is making sure we focus on cocktails that would be difficult to recreate at home, are unique to us or our twists on classics. Our It’s A London Thing is our own creation – a zingy gin, ginger and lemongrass cocktail that people tend to buy as soon as they try it. Our limited editions like our Christmas Apple Pie and Cherry Amour have waiting lists before we bring them out each season! And then there are cocktails like our Rum Old Fashioned where we infuse the rum with orange zest for 48 hours – who would bother to do that  at home when they can pour ours straight out of the bottle?

And then of course is our philosophy that runs through everything we do. Yes all the ingredients and recipes are important, but ultimately we want people to have a good time. Our Sip To The Sounds music platform is a really key part of our brand.

As well as the playlists we’ve curated to accompany our cocktails, we showcase tunes we love, guests mixes and playlists to suit certain seasons / moods and in collaboration with other djs,

We also aim to spread good vibes through our branding and personality and love meeting people in person, sharing our cocktails, dj-ing, chatting to bring that all to life even more.

Tell us a bit about your ingredients and how you source them?

Making cocktails tastes as good in a bottle as if they’d been made fresh is no mean feat – especially if you want them to last. You have to choose the right ingredients and you have to balance them perfectly.

We spend a huge amount of time  sourcing the right ingredients for our cocktails. For example, the rum in our Rum Old Fashioned is the exceptional amount Gay Black Barrel Rum. We’ve always had a great relationship with Mount Gay from the bar days. Antosh has been to their distillery in Barbados and we really connect with their ethos. Most importantly though is that this more premium rum in their age is double aged and is incredibly smooth which is what makes our Rum Old Fashioned go good. A cheaper rum just wouldn’t do.

Another example is that we use 58 and Co gin in our It’s A London Thing cocktail because it is a bold London Dry Gin that really stands up to the strong ginger and lemongrass flavours. It is also produced in a sustainable, solar powered distillery on East London – owned by another female, the amazing Carmen!

For our The Marlow Negroni, we chose a different gin – the extremely small batch local gin and a gin local to where we’re based. Its citrus forward profile makes for a really fantastic, negroni-lovers’ negroni.

So as you can see, we’re pretty particular about our ingredients!

What challenges have you faced in running your own food business, and how have you overcome them?

One big thing is not getting carried away with all the ideas we have and staying focussed! I am very creative and love ideas. I’m really good at spotting trends so my immediate intuition is to jump on them, but you need to have a clear strategy and stay true to that so that we don’t spread ourselves too thinly.

Whilst obviously keeping enough flexibility to respond to key opportunities that come up. It is why we have a pretty fixed core range of cocktails but release limited editions throughout the year that allow us to lean into trends. We can then be more flexible in format and our recommended serves so we can still offer  variety to customers and also respond to the different needs of different occasions whether it be a dinner party at home, a festival or a wedding.

What are your goals for the future of your business?

Primarily to continue to have a business that aligns with things we care about and that excite that. Of course, we want to grow and deliver our experience to more people in more places whilst retaining our quality of offering in terms of the cocktails but also the music.

We want to be know as the brand that gives people good times, that makes people feel good. Both our end customers, but also our partners, collaborators and employees and our wider community.

There are also some other exciting plans underway, but I need to keep those under my hat for now!
