Meet the Makers: Louisa’s Honey

Founders: Simon, Peter and Louisa

Our unique story of how we came about the discovery of this extraordinary products began after our separate businesses were severely stung by the Pandemic. Peter’s one to one golf tuition business came to a holt and Simon left the swarm of black taxis in the fields of Epping forest.

Friends and neighbours, Simon and Peter, decided to embark on a road trip through Italy.  Only to discover a black and yellow swarm of a different kind, in the fields of Italy instead.

In the wake of the pandemic, many businesses have not only survived but thrived, adapting to new challenges and embracing innovative strategies to propel their success in a transformed economic landscape. The honey market was no different, but keen to ensure their dream took flight, Simon and Peter spread their wings, and honey, and have never looked back!

What inspired you to start your own independent food business?

While on our tour through the hills of Tuscany, we discovered the real nectar of Italy! A honey production site that we landed on by chance.  We were blown away by what we saw during our exploration and we were just mesmerised by their individual tastes, colours, textures and aromas.

We returned home from our road trip buzzing with excitement and the honey stuck on our minds.  With one fixating goal to share these extraordinary quality and range of honeys with the UK.  To make it available on our doorstep and on our supermarket shelves.

So was born the exciting range of Louisa’s Honey.  Our brand name Louisa’s Honey, bears an emotional and family significance. Louisa being the name of the Simon’s wife, and also of the late mother of Peter.  So perfectly connects both families in business together.

Returning home with one fixating goal to share these extraordinary quality and range of honeys with the UK & globally.  To make it available on our kitchen shelf! So was born the exciting range of Louisa’s Honey. Our brand name Louisa’s Honey bears an emotional and family significance. What sets your products apart from others in the market?

Our passion for the creating the best honeys  is in absolute respect of the Environment and Nature.  They are honeys collected in tightly selected areas, far from possible forms of pollution and environmental contamination.

When it comes to sustainability, in addition to our product being pure, natural and GMO free factors such as responsible sourcing and ethical production are just as important to us as environmental factors.

We work with bee farmers that are family owned and run that only use traditional, natural treatments and methods!  Bees are treated with respect and are never treated with any unnatural products or chemicals. Our honey suppliers undergo a severe selection and stringent process & specification to ensure our honey is of the highest quality, standard and purity. Tested, verified and certified by one of the world’s leading experts in the analysis of honey.  Conducted through accredited laboratories, of 100% of the lots of honey entering our warehouses.

Our verification activity of the primary producers is constant and rigourous, applied directly in the field. Furthermore, our honey glass jar are recyclable and eco friendly.  There is a reduction in waste as there’s no packaging!

We also have our honeys tested and certified for Total Activity.  This measures the antibacterial and anti microbial properties of the honeys.  Results are fantastic and are now being displayed on the labels for customers to view.  Thus, validating the high quality of Louisa’s Honey.

This is a great point of difference as currently there’s no other honey company in the UK supermarket displaying a TA score on their label, with our full range of award-winning of different flavours that are pure and natural. For example, our multi-award-winning Louisa’s Honey Bosco is a TA score of 15+ which is the equivalent of 550 MGO.  Tasty and nutritious benefits.

Tell us a bit about your ingredients and how you source them?

We sustainably source the finest, purest raw honeys from bees farms that are located in the beautiful valleys of Italy. by Identifying the best geographical areas of production, we are able to bring a piece of Italy to peoples kitchen tables here in the UK. They are honeys collected in tightly selected areas, far from possible forms of pollution and environmental contamination.  We work with bee farmers that are family owned and run that only use traditional, natural treatments and methods!  Bees are treated with respect and are never treated with any unnatural products or chemicals.

When developing a new flavour everything is conducted at the Honey production site in Italy by our honey producer, whom is a chemist.  It took a year to develop the Acacia and Ginger infusion to ensure it blended well.

Very popular for its unique flavour and added health benefits. We explored with our first and only speciality infusion to see how customers would respond to this flavour.  It is our Acacia honey 99% infused with 1% natural root ginger. Giving a uniquely sweet floral flavour followed by a ginger, and an amazingly warm lasting spiced aftertaste.  Acacia and Ginger is one of our Bestsellers because of its unique taste and added health benefits. We have received excellent feedback and responses about this particular signature product.

We have a range of 7 award winning flavours of honey.  In which 6 are 100% pure, natural honey.  Including our multi award winning Bosco, Lime, Coriander, Citrus, Chestnut and Acacia.  We also offer a speciality infused flavour our Acacia with 1% root ginger added.

What do you enjoy most about being a small independent food maker?

The fact every day is different, a new opportunity presents itself.  We are enjoying every moment of our journey, in our endeavour to make Louisa’s honey a household name.

We’ve also had a lot of interest from Celebrity chefs that use Louisa’s Honey to develop recipes that we share on our social media networks.  Louisa’s honey has even been used for a number of MasterChef UK SupperClub events, whereby Louisa’s honey features in recipes on the menu. We love the idea of supper-clubs and showing customers how Louisa’s honey can be used in recipes.  Perhaps a cookbook of Louisa honey recipe ideas by several chefs.

We are also looking to develop a range of recipes from the celebrity chefs we have collaborated with to hopefully produce a cookbook with Louisa’s Honey recipe ideas.

Honey has many avenues to explore. Food, health, nutrition and fitness. So we hope introduce additional flavours of honey to the range and even delve into the world of cosmetics.
